Press Releases
WHO: Oakland Planning and Development Corporation (OPDC)
WHAT: 2010 University of Pittsburgh Day of Caring
As part of the annual Pittsburgh Cares initiative, “Days of Caring”, the Oakland Planning and Development Corporation (OPDC) will be collaborating with the University of Pittsburgh, the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh (ICP), the Oakcliffe Housing Club, and Community Human Services on two major community service projects that will contribute to the ongoing revitalization of the Oakland community.
The Forbes Avenue project is an exciting new collaboration between OPDC, the ICP, and the University of Pittsburgh. Twenty volunteers from the University of Pittsburgh are expected to participate in the landscaping and beautification of a property owned by the ICP.
The Oakcliffe project is part of the ongoing effort to improve and expand the new parkland along Lawn Street, known as the Oakcliffe Overlook and Greenway. Over 30 volunteers from the University of Pittsburgh will be participating in these efforts, which will also be the first step in connecting South Oakland to the bicycle trail system.
Founded in 1980, OPDC is a community-based organization dedicated to building a better Oakland through job placement services, neighborhood preservation and investment programs, resident volunteer efforts, and community engagement.

All are welcome to join OPDC and MLK at the Oakland Community Mural Sketch Selection Meeting!
When: Wednesday, June 16, 2010
Location: Peoples Oakland (3433 Bates Street, 2nd Floor)
Time: 6:00pm
Oakland Planning and Development Corporation (OPDC) is partnering with Moving the Lives of Kids (MLK) Community Mural Project this summer to create a mural on the exterior wall of Sorrento’s Pizza Roma on Atwood Street to celebrate the Oakland community.
After our community input meeting on May 19th, MLK asked local artists to produce sketches for what the mural could look like based on your ideas. At the June 16 meeting, artists will present the sketches they’ve designed for the mural.
We need YOUR INPUT again to select a sketch for the mural in order for it to truly reflect our neighborhood.
Once a final sketch is selected, OPDC and MLK will recruit Oakland youth to paint the mural in July!
For questions for more information, contact Kelly Wawrzeniak, OPDC Manager of Communications and Special Projects at 412-621-7863 ext. 13 or kellyw@opdc.org.
