Pitt Task Force on Public Algorithms

Thanks to everyone who attended the April 4 meeting. The recording is now on our YouTube channel.

Representatives from the Pitt Task Force on Public Algorithms will present their findings and recommendations about how local government algorithms impact public safety and quality of life issues for residents.

Increasingly, local government agencies are using algorithms to make decisions about how they deliver services to the public: from bus schedules, to timing of stoplights, to where and when police patrols are conducted, etc. Yet the public knows very little about these systems: how they work, their goals, what data about us that they use, and more. There's also evidence that these systems exacerbate bias and harm, especially along race and gender lines.

The Task Force is looking to influence change across our city and county around these practices, and they want to inform and engage local community groups in their work.
