The Forbes Avenue Betterment Project is a response to growing concerns surrounding bike and pedestrian safety along the stretch of Forbes Avenue that connects the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.
PennDOT plans to repave Forbes from the Birmingham Bridge to Margaret Morrison and will improve the street at various locations as needed. The section of Forbes between Craig Street and Margaret Morrison will be rebuilt to include bike lanes running in both directions, traffic signal upgrades, and crosswalks. The new design will transform Forbes into a two-lane road, compared to its current four-lane structure, which will significantly shorten the distance for people crossing the road and should slow automobile traffic.
