Pitt Rehabilitation Projects

Heinz Chapel Fleche (South Bellefield Avenue)

The fleche (also referred to as the ‘spire’) of Heinz Chapel is over 83 years old. The material used to build the fleche (lead coated copper) has deteriorated to a point where the entire cladding needs to be replaced to ensure structural stability. The University is ensuring that no detail will be lost in a rebuilt fleche. If different material is used for the replacement, the project will be presented to the Historic Review Commission for review and approval.

Thaw Hall (3943 O'Hara St)

Inspections have found that the roof of Thaw Hall, built in 1909/1910, will need to be replaced. To accomplish the roof replacement, the building cornice will need to be removed. Because of the age of the architectural features, it is expected that some portions will be too damaged to reuse and will need to be replaced. Upcoming exploratory investigations of the cornice will detail exactly what needs to be done. The project will be presented to the Historic Review Commission for review and approval.

University Club Terrace (123 University Pl)—COMPLETE

The outdoor fourth floor terrace of the University Club will undergo a renovation, which includes stabilizing and repairing the historic railing, replacing a failing roof and saturated substrate under the existing pavers (to be reinstalled), and adding lighting. After repair, the historic railing will need to be raised by 9.5 inches to allow for proper structural attachment, and necessary insulation and waterproofing will be installed at the lower terrace. The added lights will be directed only on the terrace and will not serve as architectural lighting. The project will be presented to the Historic Review Commission for review and approval.

Schenley Quadrangle Steps (3990 Fifth Ave)

The steps from Forbes Avenue to Schenley Quad feature a stone balustrade. The height of this balustrade is not compliant with code so there is a plan to raise the balusters. There are other sections where the balusters will be replicated to add additional safety on the main Schenley Quad level. The project will be presented to the Historic Review Commission for review and approval.
